Visit this 18th Century Manor House and experience a unique combination of traditional Cornish plantings and a formal parterre garden. This historical garden takes you back before the reign of Queen Elizabeth, when it was the home of the Nicholls family. John Nicholls made many improvements to the house, including the creation of the classic Queen Anne front. In the early 19th Century Perry Le Grice inherited the estate, and it has remained in the Le Grice family ever since. During the 1930s Charles Henry Le Grice planted magnolias, rhododendrons and azaleas around the pond, and in the 1970s his son added a magnificent collection of camellias that burst into bloom in March. A lifetime of well-planned planting makes this a garden to be explored throughout every season. Ceanothus Repens creates a radiant carpet of blue throughout May, generous plantings of agapanthus are at their best in late summer, and the Magnolia Campbellii flowers in time for Valentine's Day. Follow an avenue of medlar trees down the main driveway to find the unique parterre garden, edged with box and flanked by santolina. Wisteria Floribunda has flowered for at least 150 years along a border that runs the length of the rose-framed walled garden. Built to catch maximum sunlight, the walled garden fruits peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, apples, cherries and pears along its 18th Century brick walls. Set in parkland at the head of Newlyn Valley, this is a lovely garden for walkers and offers beautiful woodland trails with views to Mounts Bay. It's a dog friendly plot, but keep them on a lead near the enclosure of small animals and birds. For a touch of relaxation browse the art gallery or stop-in at the tearoom for lunch, tea or picnic supplies. If your green-fingered passions are fertilised following your visit, take time to pop in to the plant sales and visitor centre for your very own bit of Cornwall to take home.
