Maths may not be an obvious subject to go hand in hand with event management, but the director of a Cornish company is showing how a head for numbers can build a successful business.
Director of Truro-based Event Cornwall Claire Eason-Bassett has been named as an ambassador for STEM: a national scheme celebrating academic backgrounds in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Claire, who graduated from the University of York with a BSc (Hons) in mathematics, was put forward as a STEM ambassador by Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership.
Claire said: “My maths degree is a huge advantage in my job. I’m comfortable playing with numbers and budgets and can use logic to make effective and quick decisions.
“Maths is a great building block and can enable you to leap into almost anything. It gives you core skills that are useful in any career.
“I would encourage everyone to undertake work experience and work their way up the career ladder to build experience alongside their knowledge.
“My degree is very unusual within my business sector which helps me stand out from the crowd.”
STEM ambassadors are volunteers who promote their skills to young learners and actively encourage them to enjoy science, technology, engineering and maths subjects.
Claire has already been using her STEM ambassador status into practice by taking part in a Women in Business event with Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership.
Along with other women from Cornwall’s business community, she worked with Year 10 students from Wadebridge School and Falmouth Community College to inspire them about different career opportunities.
Kate Whetter of Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership said: “Claire is a brilliant person to have on board as a STEM ambassador. She’s enthusiastic and passionate about her job and demonstrates that a maths degree can lead to a very creative and rewarding career.”
